Essential Qualifications
- At the time of appointment, must have a law degree from a recognized university.
- For Articling Students (not yet eligible for membership in the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada), the minimum standard is: - a Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB) or Juris Doctor Degree (JD).
Language Proficiency: English essential
- General knowledge of Canadian law.
- Ability to conduct legal research.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate legal problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Interpersonal relationships
Capacity to establish and maintain constructive work relations based on mutual respect and listening in a manner that helps to advance the work of the organization.
Judgment
Capacity to draw logical conclusions from facts presented or observed in a given situation.
Confidence
Capacity to present ideas, information and advice with a positive attitude, self-assurance, belief in your own abilities and acceptance of your current limitations.
Asset Qualifications
- Master’s degree in law or other related fields such as, policy, political science, science, engineering, etc.
- Possess both a common law and civil law degree.
- Experience working in a legal environment such as a law clinic, law office or legal research.
- Experience working for government (federal, provincial/territorial, municipal).
- Experience providing legal analysis to clients.
- Experience in Northern Canada.
- Experience in a cross-cultural environment.
- Demonstrated interest in any of the following: aboriginal, environmental, resource, administrative law or litigation.
Operational Requirements
- Candidates must be flexible with respect to hours of work, lunch breaks and rest periods.
- Candidates may be required to travel by air and road throughout the North.
