Interjurisdictional Support Orders Unit (ISO Unit) (Ontario)
Type of service
The ISO Unit of the Family Responsibility Office administers the Interjurisdictional Support Orders Act, 2002 (ISO Act). The ISO Act streamlines the process for obtaining, varying and enforcing support orders involving one party who lives in Ontario and one party in a reciprocating jurisdiction.
The ISO Act applies to the registration of orders for enforcement in Ontario made in reciprocating jurisdictions, and to the establishment or variation of an order when one party lives in Ontario and the other party lives in a reciprocating jurisdiction. It does not apply to any support applications made under the federal Divorce Act or section 44 of Ontario's Family Law Act.
Once an order has been registered, established, or varied using the ISO Act, it can be filed with the Family Responsibility Office (FRO) for enforcement. The FRO will enforce such an order the same way it would enforce an Ontario order.
The ISO Unit also administers sections 18 and 19 of the Divorce Act and is responsible for processing all provisional orders made under that Act in Ontario by sending them to the appropriate Canadian province or territory for confirmation. Similarly, the ISO Unit accepts all provisional orders made under the Divorce Act from other Canadian provinces and territories and sends them to the appropriate court in Ontario for confirmation.
All the Canadian provinces and territories, the United States of America, and a number of other countries are reciprocating jurisdictions to Ontario.
