WINNIPEG, Manitoba, November 16, 2007 — The Honourable Rob Nicholson , P.C., Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, met with provincial and territorial Ministers responsible for Justice and Public Safety over the past three days to discuss key justice and public safety issues currently facing Canada.
"This Government is moving quickly and decisively to tackle crime and make our communities safer,” said Minister Nicholson. “We are working with our provincial and territorial colleagues to make sure we are responding to the needs of Canadians across the country. The discussions with our provincial and territorial counterparts were productive and encouraging, and we renewed our commitment to seeing improvements to our justice system.”

The recent Speech from the Throne has laid out specific priorities for the coming months. The Government of Canada is building on its “Get Tough on Crime” agenda by addressing real issues that face every Province and Territory, region, and jurisdiction across our vast country. My department and portfolio agencies will continue to work together with the Provinces and Territories to keep Canadian communities and families safe and secure,” said Minister Day.
The Government of Canada recently introduced the comprehensive Tackling Violent Crime Act, the first in a new series of tackling community crime bills. This legislation will better protect youth from sexual predators, protect society from dangerous offenders, get serious with drug impaired drivers and toughen sentencing and bail for those who commit serious gun crimes.
