The Aboriginal Affairs Portfolio (AAP) and employees of the Winnipeg Regional office recently participated in the Blueprint for the Future career fair. At this event, our portfolio was able to offer an information kiosk, as well as lead a variety of workshops that provided career, education and employment information. Approximately 2,000 Aboriginal high school students attended. These career fairs are part of the Department’s commitment of attracting a greater number of Aboriginal young people to careers in the justice field. This career fair is sponsored by the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation twice yearly, and is a regular outreach activity for the Aboriginal Justice Strategy (AJS).

The AJS also presented publicly, for the first time, the DVD Justice in the Classroom, as part of the workshops in Winnipeg. This module was produced by the Department in partnership with the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation and other federal partners. It is designed to present various justice-related career options specifically geared toward Aboriginal young people.

The Winnipeg event was a huge success! The AJS kiosk was busy throughout the day and all five workshops were filled to capacity. The Department of Justice workshop presenters spoke to their enthusiastic audiences about their own careers and experiences in the justice field and what a law career could possibly involve for the Aboriginal students in attendance.
