National Child Day 2009

Message from the Minister of Justice on National Child Day

National Child Day has been celebrated across Canada since 1993 to commemorate the United Nations' adoption of the United Nations Declaration of Rights of the Child and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (PDF, 60 KB) - PDF Help. This year on November 20th, we are celebrating not only National Child Day, but also the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

In 1991, the Government of Canada ratified the UNCRC, because we believe in ensuring the well-being of children. Canada supports the four guiding principles of the UNCRC: the best interests of the child; survival and development; participation; and non-discrimination.

Today, the Government of Canada remains committed to supporting children and their families. Children represent the future of our great country. The Government will continue to work, directly and in partnership with provinces and territories, stakeholders and international organizations, and the legal community to advance policies and programs that support parents and children and take their best interests into account.

The Department of Justice plays a key role in ensuring that legislation, policies and programs enhance children's safety and reflect their best interests.

Happy National Child Day!

The Honourable Robert Nicholson
Minister of Justice and Attorney General for Canada
