Purpose: The Gitxsan Unlocking Aboriginal Justice Society has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Gitxsan Unlocking Aboriginal Justice Program. The overall goals of the Program are: to enable the Gitxsan to assume responsibility for all aspects of justice involving criminal, civil and family matters; to reduce the number of Gitxsan members involved in, or incarcerated by the criminal justice system; to enable the Gitxsan House Groups to take responsibility for their House members returning from correctional and federal institutions; and to provide Justice Facilitators for each Gitxsan community. This will be achieved by working with RCMP, Crown, Corrections and the community, to provide culturally-relevant justice services to Gitxsan members.
