Purpose: The Algonquins of Barriere Lake (ABL) have entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to operate the Barriere Lake Community Justice Program. The Program seeks to offer culturally sensitive alternatives to the mainstream justice system for community members. The objectives of the Program are: to provide people with essential information when they are facing conflict or crime, including available resources and programming, alternatives to the regular court systems, conflict resolution methods, and traditional practices; to offer support to people dealing with conflict and crime, using participatory approaches to justice that address the underlying causes; and to create collaboration and networks with other internal and external services, resources and justice partners. The activities the organization will undertake to meet the objectives are: to provide on-going information on mission, services, resources and alternatives to the mainstream justice system which better meet the needs of ABL members; to raise awareness at the community level around topics such as peaceful relations, conflict resolution, and anger management, through workshops, community events and/or traditional activities. The partners with whom the organization will work are: police services, social services, the Director of Youth Protection, the Crown, and the court. The expected results of the Program are to offer a culturally sensitive alternative to the mainstream justice system which supports community members that come into contact with the law. The Program will serve the community and members of the Algonquins of Barriere Lake First Nation.
