Purpose: The Federation of Saskatchewan Indians Inc. has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Community Justice Policy, Planning and Research Development Program. The Federation of Saskatchewan Indians Justice Secretariat focuses on legislative, policy, framework and justice institutional development while supporting First Nations in fulfilling their goals of building governance capacity within their respective territories. The Justice Secretariat continues to provide support for the ongoing development and implementation of community-based restorative justice programs through two broad streams, 1) community justice policy and planning, which includes activities such as the development of justice strategies, legislative instruments, protocols, policies and programs that help to stabilize, refine and enhance the effectiveness of community justice programming; and, 2) community justice research and development, which includes activities such as liaising with the Saskatchewan Indian Justice Council, research initiatives and the provision of assistance to First Nation communities in tailoring their community justice programs to respond more effectively to the specific needs of their community members.
