The Mi'kmaw Legal Support Network (MLSN) has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to deliver the Mi'kmaq Customary Law Program (MCLP). MLSN offers culturally relevant community justice programs that hold offenders accountable, offer reparations to victims, and meet the needs of Mi'kmaq community members.
The MCLP provides pre- and post-charge diversion programs that serve youth and adults in the thirteen Mi'kmaq communities of Nova Scotia. The Program uses justice circles as a form of victim-offender mediation as well as a variety of dispositions including community and victim service orders, apologies, donations to charities, counselling, writing an essay, thanking police, observing court and abstaining from alcohol. Cases are referred from police, probation services, community agencies, Crown attorneys and community members.
