Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc. (MKO) has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to operate the MKO First Nations Justice Strategy Program.
The Program operates pre- and post-charge diversion programs in 16 First Nation communities in Northern Manitoba. The programs employ a community-based justice model that emphasizes community accountability.
The objective of the Program is to administer First Nations community justice in a manner that is culturally appropriate, through diversions to community justice committees, supported by community justice workers (CJWs). CJWs develop and utilize culturally and community appropriate methods of dealing with diversions from the court, RCMP, and Band Constables that support community, victim and wrongdoer restoration and healing.
