The Fort Nelson First Nation has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Fort Nelson First Nation Justice Program.
The Program provides diversion, sentencing recommendations, restorative justice, bylaw redevelopment, judicial mentorship, dispute resolution and mediation. The Program works with RCMP, Crown Counsel, and the BC Community Corrections liaison to achieve their goal.
The overall goal of the Program is to provide essential support services to the members of the community, while remaining cognizant of the community's vision: to have the Fort Nelson First Nation be a strong, healthy, and proud community with self-reliant members. This goal is planned for achievement through three main objectives: to reduce the number of summary offences being processed through the mainstream justice system by using alternative justice resolutions; to ensure staff are well equipped with the required tools to perform core functions; and to execute core responsibilities of the Program to realize the Fort Nelson First Nation "Reaching for Our Vision" long term plans.
