Through this project, the recipient will hold a number of youth justice sharing circles facilitated by Mi'kmaq Elders in various locations across Newfoundland and Labrador. The goal is to enhance the understanding of how Mi'kmaq's culture may interplay with the way services are delivered by youth justice stakeholders, including the RCMP, youth justice and mental health workers, etc. The sharing circles will also allow Mi'kmaq representatives to share how they perceive and experience the roles of RCMP and affiliated services providers, including the challenges faced by young Mi'kmaq when dealing with the criminal justice system. Finally, the sharing circles will provide an opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of Mi'kmaq profiles and raise cultural competencies to positively enhance relationships, interactions and quality of services. Information gathered from the sharing circles will be incorporated into a follow-up report to serve as a resource manual/guide for justice and mental health professionals working with youth in the Mi'kmaq community.
