What it is? : This indicator represents the number and percentage of adult criminal court cases that received a custodial sentence as the most serious sentence in the case.
Why is it important? : Custody is the most serious sentence handed down by the courts. A decrease this indicator could mean a criminal justice system that promotes the use of non-custodial processes such as diversion to restorative justice or community-based Indigenous justice programs, where appropriate.
Direction of improvement : The expected direction of improvement for this indicator is a decrease.
Geographic coverage : Canada
