Frequently Asked Questions
The following questions and answers provide general information about the LC-01 Indigenous hiring process.
If you have a question that we have not answered below, or you would like more information about this opportunity, contact us at ex.collectivestaffing-dotationcollective.ex@justice.gc.ca.
Q1. Is this process open to external candidates/candidates who do not currently work for the Government of Canada?
Yes. Whether you already work for the Government of Canada or not, if you are an Indigenous Person and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident you can apply.
Q2. Is this process open to internal candidates/candidates who currently work for the Government of Canada?
Yes. Whether you already work for the Government of Canada or not, if you are an Indigenous Person and a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident you can apply.
Q3. What is the purpose of this process?
We intend to establish a pool of qualified Indigenous candidates to fill a variety of LC-01 positions now and in the future. These positions will have various tenures (indeterminate, acting, assignment/secondment) and language requirements, across the Department within Canada.
Q4. How long will the pool be valid?
The pool will be valid for one year and may be extended at the manager’s discretion. For more information about pools, please refer to Development of Pool.
Q5. What benefits does a job at the Department of Justice offer?
We offer:
- Government of Canada pension and benefits
- Career development plans that can include education assistance funding and training
- Relocation Assistance
- Federal government housing in Iqalui Nunavut
- An Isolated Post Allowance* (in addition to your base salary) that is approximately $3,959 – $40,866 per year
- Vacation Travel Assistance* is provided, upon request, once or twice per year for each eligible member of your household
*Rates and frequency vary depending on the work location. All rates and conditions above are subject to change. See the Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive for more information.
Q6. How can I specify my regional location preferences in my application?
As part of your application you are asked to select work locations. We ask that you indicate where you would be willing to work in the next 6 months.
There will only be one assessment for all locations. If you are not successful in the process, your application will be eliminated from the process for all of the areas you identified.
Q7. How will official languages (English and French) be managed in this process?
The positions to be filled may have varied linguistic profiles (unilingual, bilingual, bilingual non-imperative) given location and official language requirements.
An appointment to a position with a bilingual non-imperative language profile means that the appointment is for an indeterminate period and the bilingual position has been identified by the deputy head as not requiring, at the time of the appointment, occupation by a person who meets the required level of proficiency in both official languages. We therefore encourage all applicants to apply for this job, regardless of their language profile.
You can learn more about non-imperative appointments here (Public Service Official Languages Appointment Regulations (justice.gc.ca)
Q8. I am not an Indigenous Person; when will the next opportunity be to express my interest for an LC-01 position?
After this process is complete, we will review the pool of qualified candidates from this process and an existing one. If necessary, we will explore running another LC-01 collective process that is not specific to Indigenous Peoples. We encourage interested candidates to visit the GC Jobs website regularly for job opportunities.
Q9. I am qualified in an LC-01 pool within the federal public service and I am an Indigenous Person, do I need to apply on this process?
If you self-declared as an Indigenous Person and you are qualified in a LC-01 pool within the Department, you do not need to submit an application to this process. However, we recommend that you contact us at ex.collectivestaffing-dotationcollective.ex@justice.gc.ca well before the closing date to confirm that you are already in the existing LC-01 collective pool.
If you are Indigenous and in the pool but did not self-declare as an Indigenous Person in the previous process and wish to do so, we encourage you to please contact ex.collectivestaffing-dotationcollective.ex@justice.gc.ca in order to update your information.
If you qualified in a LC-01 pool elsewhere (for example, in another federal organization or department), please be sure to complete and submit your application. We will review these situations on a case-by-case basis to determine whether the results are transferable. If we determine the process is equivalent, we may forego formal assessment and transfer you directly into the pool.
Q10. I was screened into a previous LC-01 process within the federal public service but I did not qualify. Do I need to submit my application?
Yes. ‘Screened In’ candidates from any previous LC-01 processes should submit a new application. This will provide you with the opportunity to refresh your responses since you last applied.
Q11. I am a Department of Justice employee and I have self-identified and/or self-declared as an Indigenous person with the Department (i.e. through a self-identification form, another staffing process, talent management, self-declaration PeopleSoft form), do I need to self-declare again?
Yes, you would need to self-declare again. The self-identification information you provided is confidential and we cannot use it for this, or any other, staffing process. Any self-declaration information you provided as part of a previous staffing process is not transferable to a new process for confidentiality reasons.
Q12. I am currently in a LC-01 or LP-03 position at the Department of Justice, do I need to submit an application if interested in these LC-01 opportunities?
If you are a federal public servant whose substantive position is LC-01 or LP-03, you may express your interest in a lateral move via e-mail to ex.collectivestaffing-dotationcollective.ex@justice.gc.ca. You do not need to submit an online application. Employees who are acting (temporarily) in a LC-01 or LP-03 position will need to submit an application.
Q13. I am already a federal public servant and my substantive group and level is LP-03. Do I need to undergo a formal assessment?
Hiring managers have the discretion to deploy (transfer) a person at the LP-03 to LC-01 level without a formal assessment. At a minimum, to comply with the LC group qualification standards, hiring managers must confirm in writing that the candidate meets the key leadership competencies.
Employees whose substantive position is LP-03 may express their interest in a lateral move via e-mail to ex.collectivestaffing-dotationcollective.ex@justice.gc.ca. You do not need to submit an online application.
