Crimes
Crimes: If someone commits a crime, the police can charge them for it and then they have to go to court. Depending on how serious the crime is, they might have to wait in jail after being charged.
If a judge finds them guilty of the crime, there are many different consequences the judge can order. As part of the sentence, the judge can order things like:
- counselling
- staying away from people that they might hurt
- possibly even time in jail.
Sometimes a person will have to wait in jail before they go to court and sometimes a judge will order a jail sentence. What happens depends on many things, like whether this is the first time the abuse has happened and how badly the person hurt someone.
