SASKATCHEWAN JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, April 10, 2012 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Brian A. Barrington-Foote, a lawyer with MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP in Regina, is appointed a judge of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench, to replace Madam Justice E.J. Gunn, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of September 1, 2011.
Mr. Justice Barrington-Foote received a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University in 1973 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1977. He was admitted to the bars of Saskatchewan in 1985 and Alberta in 1992, and is a past member of the Bar of British Columbia. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988.
Mr. Justice Barrington-Foote has been a partner with MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman since 2002. He was a partner with McKercher McKercher & Whitmore from 1995 to 2002 and with Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer in Calgary from 1992 to 1995. He was Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General of the Saskatchewan Department of Justice from 1987 to 1992 and held various other positions from 1985 to 1987. He practised law in Victoria, British Columbia, from 1977 to 1985. His main areas of practice were Aboriginal law, labour and employment, civil litigation, constitutional law, commercial law and administrative law.
Mr. Justice Barrington-Foote has been listed in Best Lawyers in Canada, Best Lawyers in America and in the Lexpert publication as a leader in Aboriginal law. He has been involved with the United Way Campaign in Regina since 2008 and with Hockey Regina since 2002.
This appointment is effective immediately.
