MANITOBA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, October 2, 2013 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
The Honourable Christopher J. Mainella, is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal for Manitoba, to replace Mr. Justice M.A. Monnin, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of July 1, 2013.
Mr. Justice Mainella was appointed a judge of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba in 2012. Prior to his appointment, he had been counsel for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada since 1995. His main areas of practice were criminal law, constitutional law, and extradition.
Mr. Justice Mainella received a Bachelor of Arts in 1990 from McGill University, a Master of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1993, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1994. He received a Master of Laws from the University of London, England, in 2003. He was admitted to the Bar of Manitoba in 1995.
Mr. Justice Mainella was a Moot Court judge for the Faculty of Law, University of Manitoba, for several years and a faculty member of the Law Society of Manitoba Intensive Advocacy Program. He was involved in numerous community organizations.
The Honourable James G. Edmond, a lawyer with Thompson Dorfman Sweatmann LLP in Winnipeg, is appointed a judge of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba, to replace Mr. Justice C.J. Mainella, who was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Manitoba.
Mr. Justice Edmond received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1981 and was admitted to the Bar of Manitoba in 1982.
Mr. Justice Edmond has been a lawyer with Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP since 1982 and a partner since 1990. His main practice areas were commercial law, litigation, insurance law, and construction law.
Mr. Justice Edmond was a member of several committees of the Manitoba Bar Association, including Civil Litigation, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Construction. He was Chair Emeritus of the Lex Mundi Insurance and Reinsurance Practice Group, and co-chair of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman’s Litigation Practice Group. He was a member of The Advocates Society of Manitoba and of the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities Board. He also lectured at numerous seminars for the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Bar Association.
These appointments are effective immediately.
