Quebec Judicial Appointment Announced

OTTAWA, October 4, 2013 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
           
The Honourable Stephen W. Hamilton, a lawyer with Stikeman Elliott LLP in Montréal, is appointed a Puisne Judge of the Quebec Superior Court (Montréal), to replace Madam Justice M. Savard, who was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec on April 25, 2013.

Mr. Justice Hamilton received a Bachelor of Civil Law and a Bachelor of Laws from McGill University in 1984 (gold medallist), and a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University in 1985. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1986 and the Ontario Bar in 1988.

Mr. Justice Hamilton joined Stikeman Elliott LLP as an associate in 1990 and became a partner in 1994. Prior to that, he was an associate with Martineau Walker (now Fasken Martineau) from 1987 to 1990. He was a law clerk to the Honourable Mr. Justice Antonio Lamer, Supreme Court of Canada, in 1986. His practice areas were commercial litigation, insolvency law, and competition law.

Mr. Justice Hamilton has been a member of Stikeman Elliott’s firm-wide Professional and Ethics Committee since 1996. He was a sessional lecturer in National Civil Procedure and Judicial Institutions, and in Civil Procedure at the McGill Law Faculty from 1992 to 2006, lectured on International Arbitration at the Bar School in Montréal from 2010 to 2012.

This appointment is effective immediately.
