ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, December 20, 2013 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Graeme Mew, a lawyer with Clyde & Co. Canada LLP in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Toronto) to replace Madam Justice G.I. Pardu, who has been appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Mr. Justice Mew received a Bachelor of Arts (Law) from Kingston University (UK) in 1980 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1986. He has been a Barrister in England and Wales since 1982. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1987 and the British Columbia Bar in 2010.

Mr. Justice Mew has practised with  Clyde & Co. Canada LLP (formerly known as Nicholl Paskell-Mede LLP) in Toronto since 2006. He was also with the Chamber of Ben Hubble, , Q.C. in London, UK, as a non-resident. Prior to that, he practised with Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (and its predecessor firm Smith Lyons) and with Dutton Brock Somers MacIntyre & Collier, both in Toronto. His main areas of practice were civil litigation, insurance law, sports law, arbitration and mediation.

Mr. Justice Mew has been active with several legal professional organizations. He was a council member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and served as president from 2005 to 2007.  He was a member of the ADR Section Committee of the Ontario Bar Association, a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (based in Lausanne, Switzerland), an arbitrator and mediator of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada, and a judicial and appeals officer for the International Rugby Board. 

This appointment is effective immediately.
