OTTAWA, May 12, 2014 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Pierre Labelle, a lawyer with De Grandpré Chait LLP in Montréal, is appointed a puisne judge of the Quebec Superior Court to replace Mr. Justice M. Vauclair (Montréal), who was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec on December 17, 2013.

Mr. Justice Labelle obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the Université de Sherbrooke in 1977 and was called to the Barreau du Québec in 1978. He has received his director's designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Mr. Justice Labelle has been an associate with De Grandpré Chait LLP since 1985, where he held various management positions between 1994 and 2011. He practised with Mondor, Labelle, Fournier & Houle (and predecessor firms) from 1979 to 1985, and with Boisclair, Lamoureux & Brizard in 1978. His legal practice has included real estate law, construction law, commercial law and dispute resolution.

Mr. Justice Labelle was a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal. He served as an instructor for the Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec. He has also been a board member and second vice-president of the Caisse Populaire Place Desjardins since 1994.

The Honourable Michel Beaupré, a lawyer with Langlois, Kronström, Desjardins in Québec, is appointed a puisne judge of the Quebec Superior Court to replace Madam Justice L. Moreau (Québec), who resigned effective April 15, 2014.

Mr. Justice Beaupré received a Bachelor of Laws in 1985 and a Master of Health Law in 1992, both from the Université de Sherbrooke. He received a Master of Laws from the University of Iowa in 1994. He was called to the Barreau du Québec in 1987.

Mr. Justice Beaupré has practised with Langlois, Kronström, Desjardins (and predecessor firms) since 1990. Prior to that, he practised with Marquis, Huot. His practise focused on civil litigation, administrative law, health law, commercial law, municipal law, constitutional law and Aboriginal law.

Mr. Justice Beaupré has served as a member of the Discipline Committee of the Barreau du Québec and as governor of the Fondation du Barreau du Québec since 2001. He has been a member of the Service franco-québécois de médiation du Barreau du Québec since 2009. He was an instructor at the Université de Montréal, Université Laval and the Cégep de Sainte-Foy on health law issues.

These appointments are effective immediately.
