FEDERAL COURT JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED
OTTAWA, December 12, 2014 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Simon Fothergill, a counsel with the Privy Council Office in Ottawa, is appointed a judge of the Federal Court to replace Mr. Justice E.P. Blanchard, who passed away on June 27, 2014.
Mr. Justice Fothergill received a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 1987 and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1991. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 2006 and is a past member of the bars of British Columbia, Alberta and the Yukon. In 2013, he was appointed Queen's Counsel.
Mr. Justice Fothergill has been Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet and Counsel to the Privy Council Office since 2013. Prior to that, he had been with the Department of Justice Canada since 1991 in various positions, including Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Litigation, from 2010 to 2013, and Deputy Assistant Deputy Attorney General from 2009 to 2010. He was senior associate with the firm Miller Thomson LLP (formerly Roberts & Baker) in Vancouver from 2000 to 2001; a counsel with the Department of Justice, Civil and Criminal Litigation, Vancouver Regional Office, from 1995 to 2000; and a counsel with the Department of Justice, Whitehorse Regional Office, Civil Litigation, Real Property and Commercial Law, from 1992 to 1995.
This appointment is effective immediately.
