The 2008 National Justice Survey: The Youth Justice System in Canada and the Youth Criminal Justice Act
Long description for Figure 5:
Figure 5: Percentage of respondents who indicated that the following factors play a “strong role” in contributing to youth crime. This is a vertical bar chart that illustrates the degree to which specified factors played a strong role in contributing to youth crime. Respondents could indicate if they felt more than one factor played a strong role in contributing to youth crime, therefore the total of all percentages will equal more than 100. The Y-axis is measured in percentages in increments of 10 from 0 to 80. The X-axis is divided into 7 categories. The X-axis lists the following categories from left to right:
- illegal drugs,
- youth gangs,
- family environment,
- lack of consequences,
- poverty,
- problem neighbourhoods and
- mental health issues.
Respondents felt that the specified factors played a strong role in contributing to youth crime as follows:
- illegal drugs – 71%;
- youth gangs – 71%;
- family environment – 65%;
- lack of consequences – 56%;
- poverty - 54%;
- problem neighbourhoods – 50%;
- mental health issues – 33%.
