Race across Nunavut won Northern Nation Building Award by reviving Inuit tradition
The 2024 Nunavut Quest dog team committee celebrated their Northern Nation Building award from Fulbright Canada at the National Indigenous Good Governance Awards in May.
Nunavut Quest revitalizes the dog sledding tradition, passing on knowledge from Inuit Elders to the younger generation. This year's 250 km race, from Arctic Bay to Pond Inlet, marked 25 years since Nunavut Quest began with the founding of Nunavut.
Article 11 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples affirms the right of Indigenous peoples to practice and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs.
This important annual event aligns with rights affirmed in the UN Declaration. Nunavut Quest promotes Inuit traditions, cultural practices and spiritual connections to nature, and it highlights how these are important to nation building.
