Figure 2. Profile of Families and Children
Figure 2 is a three-dimensional pie chart that illustrates the distribution of children who were aged six to thirteen in 1996-1997 among specific family compositions. The children are distributed among 6 groupings: Those born to married couples, those born to common-law couples, and those born to single mothers, none of which have undergone any transitions. Each of these groupings is then sub-divided to reveal the distribution of children whose family structure has undergone at least one transition from its original state listed above. The results are as follow:
- 65.7% of children were born to families where parents were married and had not experienced any transitions.
- 14.3% of children were born to families where parents were originally married but had undergone at least one transition.
- 6.4% of children were born to families where parents were common-law and had not experienced any transitions.
- 6.4% of children were born to families where parents were originally common-law but had undergone at least one transition.
- 1.2% of children were born to a single mother and had not experienced any transitions.
- 6.0% of children were born to single mothers and had undergone at least one transition.
