Figure 1: Rate of Canadian Youth Charged for Auto-theft

Figure 1 presents the rate of Canadian youth (1,000 youth) that were charged for auto-theft by gender and by year (from 1977 to 2001). The rate of male was almost 3 times higher than female. Female charged with auto-theft slightly increased, varying between o and less than 1 youth per 1,000 youth. In 2001, it was around 0.9. Males charged for auto-theft varied more: it decreased from 5 in 1977 to around 3 in 1984, but increased drastically to 7 in 1991. It then decreased again and in 2001 the rate of male charged for auto-theft was around 4 youth per 1,000 youth.
