Studies
Studies and resources are included here to provide contextual information and enhance the understanding of the data presented on the State of the Criminal Justice System Dashboard. By studying a topic area closely, the researcher comes to better understand the context and underlying issues of the Canadian criminal justice system, and how it interacts with other social systems, such as housing, health care, education, and employment.

Crime and Justice Statistics Hub, Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics, Statistics Canada
As part of Statistics Canada, the national statistical office, the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) provides an online resource center via the Crime and Justice Statistics Hub. This Hub ensures Canadians have key information (data, reports, infographics) on the nature and extent of crime in Canada as well as looking at the justice system as a whole.

The Parole Board of Canada (PBC) is an independent administrative tribunal that is part of the Canadian criminal justice system. It contributes to the protection of society by facilitating, as appropriate, the timely reintegration of offenders as law-abiding citizens through quality conditional release decisions. The PBC also makes record suspension and expungement decisions; and clemency recommendations. The link below provides Canadians with information resources related to its programs and services.

As the ombudsman for federally sentenced offenders, the Office of the Correctional Investigator (OCI) serves Canadians and contributes to safe, lawful and humane corrections through independent oversight of the Correctional Service of Canada by providing accessible, impartial and timely investigation of individual and systemic concerns. In addition to the OCI’s annual reports, they also publish related special topic research reports.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) provides links to publications summaries and one-pagers prepared, commissioned or funded by CSC. The Research and Statistics Division (RSD) at the Department of Justice produces high-quality empirical research and statistical analysis using social science methods to help ensure policy decisions are based on evidence. While some reports are written in-house by RSD researchers, other reports are written by external subject matter specialists, who are contracted by the RSD to answer specific questions in their fields of expertise.
