The Mi'kmaq Legal Support Network (MLSN) has entered into a funding agreement with the Department of Justice Canada to manage the Justice Committee and Elder Council Training Project.
The objective of the Project is to increase the involvement of community members in the local administration of justice. This objective will be achieved by hosting 14 justice committee/Elder training sessions in the communities of Membertou, Eskasoni, Waycobah, Wagmatcook, Chapel Island, Paktenkek, Pictou Landing, Millbrook, Indian Brook, Kluscap, Cambridge, Bear River, Acadia and Halifax. The training sessions will increase participants' understanding of the mainstream justice system, Mi'kmaw customary law, the circle facilitation process, conflict resolution, in addition to training participants on the operation of local justice committees. Participants in the training sessions will include selected community members, Elders and justice referral agencies such as Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Agencies, Police, Nova Scotia Crowns, and Court Workers.
